Stress is defined as a psycho-physiological activation syndrome that prepares the body for a fight or flight response to an imminent threat. In adaptive terms, stress is at the service of defending ourselves “in the best possible way” from what we must face. However, when this defensive response is constant, both our body and our mind end up “melting” and we begin to “malfunction.” Difficulty in concentrating, memory problems, tiredness, anguish, anxiety, and physical symptoms such as tachycardia, tremor, dizziness, etc., are all signs and symptoms that reveal the effects that such an overload of tension produces on us.
In addition to the events that we face every day, the effect they produce on us is related to the way each of us perceives and interprets the stimuli and how we evaluate our own resources and abilities. That is what makes the same situation be experienced as terrible by one subject, and as a challenge by another.
How To Recognize That We Have Stress?
Chronic stress responds to several conditions. One of them is your lifestyle, but there are other conditions that drive this extraordinary activation. An important factor that determines the risk of chronic stress is the personality type since each person has a different level of resistance to it. When the demands of a specific environment are excessive and overwhelm us, stress can become chronic, with the risk of altering our physical and mental health.
How Does Stress Impact Our Overall Life?
No one experiences chronic stress overnight but if all the warning signs of the body are ignored, it is likely that this condition will settle in the body and a series of undesirable effects will begin to happen. The consequences are multiple since the brain is the center that regulates all mental activity and is responsible for the functioning of humans, especially through the hypothalamus-pituitary axis located within it. Physiological alterations are often psychosomatic, i.e., they are organic alterations that are frequently the expression of other emotional ones. They can occur in the form of immunosuppression, cardiovascular diseases, digestive diseases, muscle contractures, diabetes, obesity, and much more. It can also result in emotional disorders such as irritability, aggressiveness, anxiety, sleep disorders, depression, low tolerance for frustration, loss of concentration, and addictions.
